The Midnight Yacht Club Capsule is officially our largest release to date, and perhaps one of the most meaningful. Since starting The Midnight Society I realized early on that I was drawing inspiration from pop culture, my childhood nostalgia in general really, but when I decided to create something based around a short story I had heard during one of the most difficult moments of my life, I learned that inspiration can come from anywhere, and focusing on an important personal project would soon become my way of working through it.
“George would always wear suits or at the least a button up with khakis. He was a young lawyer at the time, in his 30s, and that was his wardrobe. Never saw him in a pair of shorts or a t-shirt. So, one Friday we decide to take the sailboat out and asked him to come along, of course he shows up to the docks in a suit. I think he had just gotten out of court. Well, what we didn’t tell him until we got out on the water was that we weren’t coming back until Sunday. Well when he found out you would have thought it was the end of the world."
Last year I lost my old man to an extremely long and difficult battle with cancer. I’ve stayed relatively silent about it, but when I heard this story moments after he passed away I was filled with content that he had lived a full life, and not one moment was wasted. I'll always remember my Dad as a hard worker, extremely smart, and one of the most honest men I'll ever meet. He wouldn't take cases from clients if he knew they were lying or being dishonest.
Following in his foot steps, I got to work, and I took the feeling that story gave me and ran with it. Now, that part in the story about his wardrobe, very true, in fact I think I only saw him in a pair of shorts once as a kid. I started thinking about all the things he had probably wished he had bought for that unexpected trip. The Waterproof Dry Bag for his suit, wallet, and keys. Shorts and a T-Shirt to stay comfortable in, a blanket to sleep with, and a jacket or pullover to stay dry and warm from the water and wind.
These pieces and ideas rolled around in my head for months after he passed away. Finally, I sat down last Summer and started drawing everything out. I knew he loved the water, and maybe a part of him wished he had spent more time out on it. I suppose I'll never know the answer, but I like that idea. The Midnight Yacht Club Capsule is our largest release to date. Dedicated to my old man, and built around all the items he wished he had brought with him on a weekend excursion he didn’t plan on taking. ⛵️ Available Now.
